A Parent’s Guide to NYSSMA Success
To All Long Island Parents (Specifically those around the Town of Huntington),
If your child is participating in the upcoming NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) festival, you know it is an exciting milestone in their musical journey. Whether this is their first evaluation or they are aiming for All-State, proper preparation is the key to a positive, confident experience. In this blog post and the next few ones, we will cover what you need to know to help get your child prepare and succeed.
What is NYSSMA?
NYSSMA is an annual professional evaluation where students perform before a certified adjudicator. It is not a competition against others, but a personalized assessment of your child’s musical growth. Students are evaluated on:
A Prepared Solo: From the official manual.
Scales: Testing technical proficiency.
Sight-Reading: Playing a short piece of music they have never seen before.
Why Specialized Support Matters
School music teachers are phenomenal, but with large class sizes, it can be difficult to give every student the one-on-one, granular attention needed for specific NYSSMA details.
How Harborfields Music Center Can Help:
We act as a focused support system for your school’s music program. Our specialized NYSSMA Prep lessons focus on:
Solo Polish: Refining dynamics, phrasing, and artistic expression to impress the adjudicator.
The "Hidden Points": Structured drills to master scales and sight-reading (often where students gain or lose the most points!).
Mock Auditions: Simulating the actual room environment to build confidence and reduce performance anxiety.
Mindset: Ensuring your child walks into the room feeling ready and proud of their hard work.
